Although not a big Diane Lane fan I was persuaded to rent “Under the Tuscan Sun” a few days ago. I must admit that although the person that recommended it to me has rarely steered me wrong I was a little less than thrilled with this suggestion. Not that I think she can’t act and since I was recently pleasantly surprised with “Untraceable” I decided not to bemoan their selection to much and just watch the dang movie.

Let me set the premise for you. A lady finds out that her husband has cheated and basically looses almost everything. Because they are worried about her some friend send her on a “Gay” tour of Tuscany to help her get over this point in her life and while there she impulsively buys a Tuscan Villa and decides to move. Sound pretty far fetched if I had asked me. However, it isn’t. Yes, most people wouldn’t do what she does or for that matter have the money to do what she does but this story is artfully written so that you understand not only why she does it but why it turns out to be the best decision she could ever have made.

Plus they keep you guessing as to if this is a romantic movie or an uplifting one and I would hazard to say that even in the end your still not sure if it can be categorized as one or the other or both. Over all the story will touch you and you will find yourself feeling her struggles (especially if you have ever been hurt before) and joy. I mean after all who hasn’t done something foolish and it accidentally worked out?

Extras where a little less enjoyable for me. There was a commentary from the director but it really started to put me to sleep. One person doing a commentary just isn’t the same as a group. To me it comes out as a little more like narration but that is strictly my opinion.

In short if you like movies that can make you think and open your eyes to some things in your life you might want to change this might be the movie for you. And if not you still might enjoy the sunsets and atmosphere of the movie.

Michael Fenger was formerly from Motorola. He joined Apple in March to be in charge of global iPhone sales.

Prior to joining Apple, Fenger was an executive for Motorola in that amorphous MBA-created part of the world known as EMEA (Europe, Middle East, and Africa). As such, he was in a position to know almost everything about Motorola’s business practices and strategies, and Motorola thinks he is now using that information to harm the company and help Apple, according to Bloomberg. [source]

Motorola has been in a bit of a stumble ever since they left the mother company. But your guess is as good as mine as to why they are really suing. I guess with the iPhone playing a crucial part in Apple’s road to competition in the mobile phone industry, Motorola already has enough trouble staying in the top 5. What a blow.

It comes down off the free web tomorrow, so watch it now, while you can. It’s brilliant!

While watching it, I noticed that it’s hosted by Hulu. I’ve come to watch a bit more Hulu recently, especially since I noticed that they have complete movies on the site. Who doesn’t love free movies?

Even better is if you just go to their RSS Feed page and subscribe to the Recently Added Movies feed, so you can keep track of all of their new releases.

And, of course, while you are watching, note that there is an option (after you start it) to switch to a higher-resolution (480p, in this case) mode. Not HD, but better than nothing.

T-Mobile might be in deep s#it as consumers are up in arms over mobile phone spam. Truth be told, the story of cellphone spam is nothing more than push advertising but with your subscriber base ranting over being misinformed on whether or not they subscribed to a service in the first place.

Culturally speaking, the level of aggression differs per country. Some folks don’t really mind being sent text spam - for instance if this is the business model behind getting free credits. So yeah it depends, but T-Mobile isn’t in any good shape with its irate customers who ARE getting spammed.

I think the way to go should be permission based advertising - mobile phone carriers should still ask subscribers whether they should have certain “spam” turned on. This also allows you to further customize these messages to fit the demographic and thus have, well relatively, better conversion rates into sales.

I’m checking out 3 popular music search engines (songza, seeqpod, and skreemr). Among the 3, I seem to like songza more.

When using a music search engine, I expect to search either for a specific song, or I enter an artist and expect to see a list of songs by that artist. I don’t want to see wikipedia articles or news about those artists.

I tried doing a search for “Duran Duran”, one of my favorite bands in the 80’s and here’s what songza returned.

Songza returned a list of Duran Duran songs. The nice thing about this is that if I click one of the songs, it’ll play it. Really cool!

The second music search engine I tested was Seeqpod. Here’s what seeqpod returned.

Honestly, I didn’t like what I saw. I has a couple of links to you tube. Does this mean that if I create a video at youtube and I include the word “Duran Duran” in the title my video would be included in this search result page? Hmm…. we might be seeing a new form of spam. … ‘video spam’.

The 3rd music search engine I tested was skreemr. Here’s what it looks like.

This one seems better. One of the results was “The Reflex” which was a very good Duran Duran song. I noticed that the link pointed to this file “http://musicglob.com/wp-content/uploads/2007/04/duran-duran-the-reflex.mp3?

When I click that link, it’ll play the song.

I guess by creating a music search engine which crawls the net in search for mp3 files uploaded on websites and indexing it, these search engines won’t be liable for copyright infringement since technically, those mp3 files are not hosted on the search engines. They just “found” these files and returns a list of urls where it can be found.

People can then just do a right click and click “save as” and these mp3 files would be downloaded to their hard disks.

I say Yahoo did the right thing by fighting off Microsoft. Dvorak says shareholders who disagree are sick and greedy. Carl Icahn, champion of the sick and greedy, proposes a board full of losers.

Good to see Yahoo’s biggest shareholders finally see the light.

Carl Icahn’s chances to win the Yahoo proxy war, which had been getting increasingly slim, just dropped to next-to-nothing: Legg Mason’s Bill Miller, who controls 4.4% of of Yahoo shares, just formally sided with Jerry and his existing board.

Technically, Carl still has bullets left: Gordy Crawford, who controls 6.5% of the company, has let it be known that he’s displeased with Jerry, but hasn’t formally come out on Icahn’s side, which leads us to believe that he’s not going to. And in any case, Carl needs 50% of Yahoo shareholders on his side by August 1, and he’s not going to get it with major institutions pre-emptively voting for Jerry.

Carl Icahn says “It’s hard to understand these technology companies.” No it isn’t, Carl. Successful technology companies build new things of lasting value. They’re not just in it for a quick buck. I’m not the biggest Yang fan in the world, but I can see he’s not just in it for a quick buck.

Corporate raiders like Icahn, on the other hand, are easy to understand. They’re just in it for a quick buck, at the expense of any lasting value for customers like you.

Personally I find it odd to see a Linux distro CD/DVD being sold for a really high price. I don’t mind it if it’s basically the cost of shipping a CD or a DVD and the cost of burning a copy because that’s been downloaded from the internet and there is cost in terms of bandwidth. I also don’t think there’s something wrong if developers do sell installers of the Linux distro they worked on if it’s to fund further development of the software. However, I find it wrong if people would sell a downloaded distro for something really expensive when they weren’t the ones who made it and they’re just doing it for profit. Why? Because they didn’t even have a major part it the creation of it, only the distribution. And if there’s not even an added service like tech support or something like that, why bother buying a copy of a Linux distro installer? Just ask someone else who has a copy to give you one and use that one instead.

I don’t know about you but if buying a copy of Linux distro installer is waaay expensive, I’d think about it really hard before getting it. What about you?
